All images displayed on this site are licensed under Creative Commons licenses. Here are the types of licenses you may encounter:

CC0 (Public Domain)

No restrictions. You can copy, modify, and distribute the work without asking permission.

CC BY (Attribution)

You must give appropriate credit to the original author.

CC BY-SA (Attribution-ShareAlike)

You must give credit and share any derivatives under the same license.

CC BY-NC (Attribution-NonCommercial)

You must give credit and cannot use the work for commercial purposes.

CC BY-ND (Attribution-NoDerivatives)

You must give credit and cannot distribute modified versions.

CC BY-NC-SA

Attribution, non-commercial, and share-alike requirements combined.

CC BY-NC-ND

Most restrictive: attribution required, non-commercial only, no derivatives.

TASL Attribution Method

We follow the TASL (Title, Author, Source, License) method for proper attribution of Creative Commons licensed works:

  • Title: The name of the work (animal name)
  • Author: The photographer's name with a link to their profile
  • Source: Where the work was found (iNaturalist/GBIF)
  • License: The specific Creative Commons license
