About the Animal Search
The animal search page lets you look up any species in our database by its common name (like "red fox") or by its scientific name (like Vulpes vulpes). Results come straight from iNaturalist and GBIF, so every match includes the photograph, the scientific classification, and credit for the photographer who recorded the observation.
Type a few letters and press search. Exact matches appear first, but partial words work too, so one short term can surface species from several very different groups. If nothing comes back, the species may simply not have a research-grade observation yet - try a broader term or browse a category instead.
Search is handy for students checking a homework fact, for gardeners identifying a backyard visitor, and for teachers or writers who need a correctly named, properly licensed photo. Every result can be opened, added to your favorites and shared.
